Creating A Rubric In Moodle

Moodle allows for rubrics to be created and embedded within an assignment. This allows an instructor to be able to click through a rubric and add feedback, which can save grading time for the instructor. There are two ways to create a rubric. They are (1) from scratch and (2) from a template.

NOTE: You should create your rubric BEFORE students begin submitted assignments. If you create it afterwards, students will not be able to see their grades.

From Scratch

To create a rubric from scratch in Moodle:

  1. Click on the assignment you want to add a rubric to. Then click the gear to the right of the assignment name and select Edit Settings.

  1. Scroll down to the Grade section. Select Rubric from the Grading Method drop-down box. Click either Save and Return to Course or Save and Display at the bottom of the screen.

  1. To create a rubric from scratch, select the “Define new grading form from scratch” button.

  1. Key in the Name and Description of the rubric. Scroll down to the Rubric section.

  1. In the Rubric section, you will need to set up the criteria and points you will be grading on.

A. Click this box to add the criterion you are grading.

B.  Click this box to add the first grouping of points. You can also add specific information so that students know how to earn those points.

C.  Click this box to add the second grouping of points. You can also add specific information so that students know how to earn those points. If you do not need this, click the “x” to remove it.

D.  Click this box to add the third grouping of points. You can also add specific information so that students know how to earn those points. If you do not need this, click the “x” to remove it.

E.  Click this box to add another grouping of points.

F.  Click this to add another criterion.

Review the Rubric Options underneath the criteria you added and choose how you want the rubric to function. Click on either the “Save rubric and make it ready” button on the “Save as draft” button. If you select the “Save as draft” button, you will not be able to use the rubric in your course until you go back in and click the "Save rubric and make it ready" button.

  1. (Optional) Once you have saved and made your rubric ready, you can choose to make it a template for future courses. To do this, click the “Publish the new form as template” button. Then click Continue. The rubric will now be available to anyone that uses Moodle at SNU.

  1. Once you have saved and made your rubric ready, you will then see it when you click on the Grade button within the assignment or when you go into Moodlerooms Grader for that assignment. To use the rubric, click on the point value the student has earned for each of the criteria. You will also be able to provide feedback for each criteria as well as overall feedback. To make the rubric larger, click on the box with arrows (as shown in the screen shot).

From a Template

There are several rubric templates in Moodle that you can select from. Keep in mind that if the template is not exactly what you need, you can modify it to meet your needs.

To create a rubric using a template:

  1. To create a rubric from a template, select the “Create new grading form from a template” button.

  1. Browse through the templates that are available. When you find the one you want to use, click on “Use this template.”

  1. Click the Continue button.

  1. If you do not want to change anything on the rubric, you are finished. If you do want to edit the rubric, click on the “Edit the current form definition” button.

  1. You can then update anything you need to update. You can add new criteria, change point values, etc. (See Steps 5-7 in the From Scratch section.)

Editing a Rubric

If you need to make changes to a rubric once you have created it, go back into the assignment and click the gear to the right of the assignment name. Select Define Rubric from the drop-down list. You will then be able to make changes to the rubric.

Deleting a Rubric

If you need to delete a rubric once you have created it, go into the assignment that has the rubric you want to delete. Click on the gear to the right of the assignment name. Select Advanced Grading.

Then click the “Delete the currently defined form” button.

Student View

The student view of an assignment with an embedded rubric looks like this. You can see the rubric under the Grading Criteria section. You will not see it in that area as the instructor.
